WTO Launches Investigation of Argentina's Import Restrictions

January 29, 2013

On January 28, 2013, the World Trade Organization (WTO) initiated a formal investigation into Argentina’s import licensing policies by creating a WTO dispute settlement panel to address complaints from Japan, the European Union, and the United States.  The investigation follows U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk’s December 2012 request to establish a panel examining Argentina’s import restrictions on all U.S. goods.  The panel will probe accusations that Argentina’s practices of requiring cumbersome licenses and preregistration and  compelling importers to agree to trade balancing practices are unfairly restricting access to its markets.
