Obama Plans to Nominate Senator Baucus as Ambassador to China

December 20, 2013

Earlier today, President Obama announced his intent to name Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) as his nominee for Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.  In a press release, Baucus stated, “I am humbled by the nomination and deeply honored to have the opportunity to represent the United States in China…If confirmed, my goal will be to further strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between our two nations.”  Senator Baucus is currently the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation, and a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.

In a statement released by the White House, President Obama commented, “For more than two decades Max Baucus has worked to deepen the relationship between the United States and China.  The economic agreements he helped forge have created millions of American jobs and added billions of dollars to our economy, and he’s perfectly suited to build on that progress in his new role.”  If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Senator Baucus will replace Gary Locke, who intends to step down from his post in 2014.  Sources indicate that Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) will succeed Senator Baucus as Finance Committee chairman.
