U.S. Senate Committee Approves Ukraine Legislation

March 14, 2014

On Wednesday, the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations approved The Sovereignty, Integrity, Democracy, and Economic Stability of Ukraine Act of 2014 (S.2124), which provides $1 billion in loan guarantees for Ukraine as well as imposes sanctions against Ukrainian and Russian officials involved in human right violations. Additionally, the bill reforms the United States’ involvement in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in order to facilitate support for Ukraine from other countries.

S.2124, introduced by Committee Chair Robert Menendez, D-NJ, is similar to the bipartisan aid package the House approved last week, which includes multiple relief measures for Ukraine.  The Senate, however, has limited time to vote on the measure before going on a week-long recess next week.

Chairman Robert Menendez issued the following statement after the bill was approved with a bipartisan vote of 14 to 3.

“Passage of this bill today in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee reaffirms America's         commitment to standing by the Ukrainian people as they strive to determine their own future and         destiny without meddling from Russia.”
