Congress Passes DHS Funding Bill

March 4, 2015

The House and the Senate have both passed a bill that will fund the Department of Homeland Security through the end of this fiscal year with $39.7 billion.  Congress had until March 6, 2015 to pass the budget and decide whether to defund President Obama's controversial executive actions on immigration.  The Senate passed the budget on February 27th with a 68-31 vote and the House voted in favor of the bill with a 257-167 vote on March 3rd.  On February 27th, the House failed to pass a three week continuing resolution, which would allow more time to debate the DHS budget and the immigration funding issue.  The immigration funding restrictions were removed in the finalized bill, which allowed it to pass Congress and be sent to the White house for signature.

Secretary Jeh C. Johnson of the Department of Homeland Security stated in a press release on March 3, “Congress has done a good thing. It has fully funded homeland security.  Now our men and women can return to the vital work of combatting terrorism, ensuring border security, port security, aviation security, cybersecurity, and our other vital homeland security missions, without the uncertainty of a furlough or a delayed paycheck hanging over their heads.”
