USDA Increases Sugar Import Quota, Anticipates Changes to GMO Labeling Rules

On May 17, the USDA announced an increase in the amount of raw cane sugar allowed into the domestic market by 500,000 short tons. The decision comes in an attempt to aid domestic beverage and food producers who depend upon sugar.
Domestic sugar producers have faced a difficult season, and looming possibilities of new, stricter labeling rules for products made with GMO’s serve only to increase supply uncertainty.
