U.S. and China Conclude Strategic & Economic Dialogue, Steel Tensions Still Unresolved

The U.S.-China Strategic & Economic Dialogue (S & ED) conclude on June 7 without resolving the steel-related tensions. Although the majority of the summit focused upon China’s steel overcapacity, an agenda likely motivated by the recent ITC decision to investigate China’s largest steelmakers for alleged theft of trade secrets, price fixing, and trade duties evasion, officials produced no significant policy solutions.

Chinese officials promised to take steps to “strictly contain” steel capacity expansion, as well as halt any production that fails to meet certain environmental, energy, consumption, or safety criteria.
