Food Safety Bill Sent to President

December 22, 2010

By passing the House on December 21, 2010, the Food Safety Bill (H.R. 2751) cleared its final Congressional hurdle and will now be sent to the President. The Senate had already passed H.R. 2751 on December 19, 2010.  The President is expected to sign the bill into law in the near future.

The Senate initially passed the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act on November 30, 2010. As a result of minor technical errors in the bill, a version with slight technical alterations was passed in the House on December 8, 2010 and sent back to the Senate for another vote.On December 19, 2010 the Senate approved the Food Safety Bill by unanimous consent. The version that passed the Senate originated from a shell bill used in the House.
