Trade-Related Highlights from President Obama's Trip to Mexico

The White House has posted to its website a press conference transcript and a fact sheet from President Obama’s April 16, 2009 visit it Mexico City. According to the fact sheet, trade-related highlights of President Obama’s meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderón include:

  • The U.S. and Mexico trucking dispute
  • Strengthening border security
    • Increased customs cooperation
    • The possibility of one single customs form for exports and imports from one country to another
    • Concrete measures to harmonize standards
  • Making NAFTA labor and environmental provisions enforceable within that agreement rather than being viewed as a side agreement
  • Security and climate change cooperation
  • Bilateral framework on clean energy and climate change.
