Free Trade Agreements Advance in House

October 6, 2011

The House Ways and Means Committee approved pending free trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea, Colombia and Panama during its October 5th markup. The Committee passed the South Korea agreement by a 31-5 vote and the Panama agreement by a 32-3 vote. The Colombia agreement, which passed the committee by a 24-12 vote, saw the most debate. Multiple Congressmen, including Ranking Committee Member Sander Levin (D-M), voiced concerns over the lack of a direct and enforceable tie between the Colombia FTA and the Colombia Labor Action Plan. The House and Senate are expected to vote on the three FTAs as early as next week.
