April 2001
Foot and Mouth Disease in the EU

In the past week, there have been developments regarding the FMD situation in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands and France.

  1. United Kingdom: The existing restrictions on the UK have been prolonged. A regionalized approach has been agreed to for Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland, the dispatch of non-treated products is prohibited from the area where the only outbreak took place, the district Newry and Mourne in Country Armagh. Conditions have been set in case the UK carries out plans for emergency vaccination of cattle in Devon and Cumbria.

  2. Ireland: The existing restrictions have been prolonged.

  3. The Netherlands: The existing restrictions have been prolonged. Conditions were set for emergency vaccination in the Netherlands. Emergency vaccination in the Netherlands began on March 26.

  4. France: Different measures have been adopted. There is now a general prohibition on the dispatch of live susceptible animals, fresh meat and meat products, milk and milk products and other animal products of susceptible animals from mainland France. This measure applies until April 12, but if not further outbreaks are reported until April 2 and if all tests are negative, from April 3 onwards the prohibition on the dispatch of fresh meat and meat products, milk and milk products and other animal products from susceptible animals will only apply to the departments Sein-et-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val d'Oise.

The Members of the EU confirmed that there is no support for general preventive vaccination of animals for the EU as a whole. Vaccination is only used when the preemptive killing of animals must be delayed due to certain constraints.

On a related note, the USDA has prohibited the importation of all used farm equipment imported from country affected by Foot and Mouth Disease.
