USTR Calls for Comments on Mexico and Canada's Participation in TPP Negotiations

July 26, 2012

On July 23, 2012, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) published requests for comments regarding negotiating objectives with respect to Mexico and Canada’s participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) negotiations. The USTR formally notified Congress of its intent to include Mexico and Canada in the TPP negotiations on July 9th and 10th, 2012. The notifications initiated a mandatory ninety-day Congressional consultation period before Mexico and Canada can join the TPP negotiations. The USTR is seeking public comments on all elements related to Mexico and Canada’s participation in the TPP negotiations in order to develop U.S. negotiating positions.

Written comments regarding Mexico and Canada’s participation in the TPP negotiations are due by noon on September 4, 2012. The USTR will also hold hearings regarding Mexico participation on September 21, 2012, and Canada’s participation on September 24, 2012.
