President Obama Nominates CBP Commissioner

August 09, 2013

President Obama recently named R. Gil Kerlikowske as his nominee for commissioner of U.S. Custom and Border protection.  Mr. Kerlikowske is currently Director of National Drug Policy at the White House, and before that served as Chief of Police in Seattle, Washington.  The next step in his confirmation process will requires approval from the Senate Committee on Finance.

Barnes/Richardson partner Larry Friedman commented on the nomination in International Trade Today, saying, [While CBP] “is an important law enforcement agency and plays an important role in protecting the national security, it is also critical that the agency continue its tradition of working with trade interests to facilitate legitimate trade. I suspect that, assuming he is confirmed, Kerlikowske will work closely with the veteran employees in the agency on that important mission.”
