U.S., E.U. Extend High-Quality Beef Agreement

October 22, 2013

Yesterday in Geneva, Deputy United State Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Punke signed an agreement extending U.S. high-quality beef access to European Union (EU) markets at zero duty. USTR Michael Froman and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the extension in August of this year, and it provides for the EU to continue its duty free tariff rate quota for high quality beef produced from non-hormone-treated cattle until August 2, 2015.  The beef will be imported at a quantity of 45,000 metric tons per year, pursuant to Phase 2 of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the governments Regarding the Importation of Beef from Animals not Treated with Certain Growth Promoting Hormones.
