President Obama issues an executive order to eliminate the Liberian sanctions program

November 18, 2015

On November 12, 2015, President Barack Obama issued an executive order terminating the Liberian sanctions program. The original order was put in place in 2004 as a direct result of the actions taken by former Liberian President Charles Taylor and other individuals that depleted Liberian resources, funds, and property and severely undermined the country’s transition to democracy.
President Obama has now decided to lift the sanctions on Liberia, as a result of the freely held elections in Liberia and the conviction of former President Taylor. In addition, the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) has updated their list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) and Blocked Persons. The President’s newest termination order can be found here, while OFAC’s updated list can be found here.
