Rep. Dave Reichert to Oversee TPP Analysis

December 4, 2015

The newest Chairman of the House of Ways and Means Committee, Representative Dave Reichert (R-WA), recently declared that he will oversee a thorough analysis of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Reichert says that this review is his top priority. He claims the analysis will ensure that the deal coincides with the negotiating objectives of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). “Right now, we are all in the process of comparing TPA language to the TPP language and discussing it with our constituents and getting into more discussions as people learn more and more about what's actually in TPP,” Reichert said.
In the meantime, the Chairman is withholding full support of the TPP until the examination is complete. Several other members of Congress also have concerns, leaving them skeptical about the trade agreement. The areas of controversy associated with TPP include tobacco control rules and patent protection for biological drugs.
The examination is already in motion and is set to conclude before Congress votes on the trade agreement.
