FDA Announces Increased Surveillance, but No Import Restrictions for European Produce

June 6, 2011

According to a press release the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued June 3, 2011, the FDA has not established Import Restrictions on produce from Europe following the recent E. coli outbreak. Additionally, the FDA believes that the E. coli outbreak in Europe has not affected the U.S. food supply. The FDA further pointed out in the news release that the U.S. receives relatively little fresh produce from the EU, particularly at this time of year.

As a precaution, the FDA is conducting increased surveillance of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and raw salads from areas of concern. Increased import controls include sampling and analyzing these products when they are presented for import. If contaminated produce is found, the FDA will not allow the produce to enter the United States and will flag future shipments for appropriate action.
