USTR Releases Fact Sheets about USMC Trade Agreement

On October 1, 2018, the USTR published several fact sheets concerning the recently signed United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA):
  • Modernizing NAFTA into a 21st-Century Trade Agreement - this fact sheet summarizes the updated Intellectual Property provisions of the USMCA.  Notable among these are new standards for Geographic Indicators that both recognize new GI's and prevent their utilization as non-tariff barriers.

  • Agriculture:    Market Access and Dairy Outcomes -- this fact sheet highlights the market access obtained by United States dairy producers in the Canadian market.  Canada has agreed to eliminate classes 6 and 7 from its current milk pricing system.

  • Strengthening North American Trade in Agriculture -- this fact sheet summarizes updates pertaining to other agricultural sectors.  New biotechnology protections for gene-editing techniques, as well as rDNA technologies already protected.

  • Rebalancing Trade to Support Manufacturing -- this fact sheet summarizes new provisions for the manufacturing sector, such as revised rules of origin and a new labor value content requirement for automobiles and auto parts.
