USDA Bans 6 Strains of E. coli in Beef

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expected to formally announce later today its plan to ban six new strains of E. coli from domestic and imported ground beef. The new strains the USDA plans to ban include E. coli 026, 045, 0103, 0111, 0121 and 0145. The USDA already has a ban in place on E. coli 0157:H7, which it instituted after an outbreak occurred in 1994. The USDA is expected to begin enforcing the new ban in March 2012.
