New Timetable for FTA Votes in Congress

October 7, 2011

The U.S. Senate plans to vote on the free-trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea, Colombia and Panama on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. After the three bills were approved by the House Ways and Means Committee on October 5th, they must now be advanced by the full House. The House will vote on the FTAs on the same day, along with the Trade Adjustment Assistance program (TAA) and the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). The three bills can reach the Senate once the House approves TAA and GSP. As of yesterday, the Senate Finance Committee scheduled a hearing on the FTAs for October 11th.  With this new agenda, the agreements could be passed before the arrival of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in Washington on October 13th.
