Rep. Brady Announces Plan for "Mock" FTA Legislation Mark-Ups

June 15, 2011

Representative Brady (R-TX), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Trade Subcommittee, recently announced that he expects the House Ways and Means Committee to hold “mock” mark-ups of the three pending FTAs the week of June 20, 2011. Representative Brady wants the Administration to send Congress the implementing legislation packages for all three of the pending FTAs shortly following the “mock” mark-ups in order to allow for formal mark-ups of the implementing legislation and to allow for the possibility of the legislation being brought to the House floor in July. Disputes over renewing Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) continue to act as a roadblock to passing the FTAs. According to Representative Brady, a bipartisan deal will not be reached on TAA as long as Democrats insist on renewing the 2009 expanded version of TAA.
