AGOA Petition Process Finalized

May 2, 2016

The USTR finalized a rule on April 29 which establishes a new review process for countries applying for preferential tariffs under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Under the new rule, petitions may be submitted on behalf of sub-Saharan countries by “any interested party.” Petitions may also be submitted at any time, provided that they provide compelling reason for an “out-of-cycle” review.

These revisions are intended to facilitate greater public involvement in trade oversight.
