Canada Day Tariffs (Apparently) on the Way

July 1 is Canada Day. It is typically celebrated with fireworks, parades, picnics, and similar activities. However, based on a social media post on June 27 from President Trump, Canadians may be spending this Canada Day calculating the impact of new tariffs on their exports to the United States.

According to the social media post, the United States has terminated trade discussions with the Canadian government because of the upcoming imposition of Digital Services Taxes by Canada. The United States has strenuously opposed such taxes around the world and they are one of the sticking points between the United States and Europe at the moment. In any case, the social media post did not indicate the expected level of the Canadian tariffs or what goods they would apply to. Presumably those details will be released “within the next seven day period.” Of course, it is also possible that the sides will be able to avert imposition of tariffs in that period.
