On June 23, 2008, Cape Verde informed the WTO it has accepted its membership agreement. According to WTO rules, Cape Verde will become the 153rd member of the organization on July 23, 2008, 30 days after the acceptance of its membership terms.
Cape Verde has been negotiating its membership since 1999. The WTO General Council approved Cape Verde’s agreement package on December 18, 2007, eight years after initiating its bid. The country now has until June 30, 2008, to ratify its accession package.
