President Obama Opens Political and Economic Relations with Cuba

December 18, 2014

On December 17, 2014 President Obama announced that he used his executive powers to open relations with Cuba.  Canada and the Pope Francis facilitated the discussions between the two nations over an eighteen month period.  While the embargo cannot be lifted without congressional approval, President Obama has opened economic and political relations between the two countries.  During an announcement of the new relationship, President Obama stated, “Increased commerce is good for Americans and for the Cuban people.”   The U.S. will be allowed to send various goods to Cuba, such as agricultural tools, products for private industries, and construction materials.  Cuban citizens will soon have access to the internet and other computer software that will connect them with the rest of the world.  The U.S. will partake in immigration talks with Cuba and will re-establish the embassy in Cuba.  President Obama stated, “In the most significant changes in our policy in more than fifty years, we will end an outdated approach that, for decades, has failed to advance our interests, and instead we will begin to normalize relations between our two countries. “
