President Trump, Prime Minister Trudeau Meet to Discuss Potential NAFTA Modifications

February 14, 2017

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump met February 13th to discuss avenues for streamlining and further integrating the two countries' customs enforcement operations.  According to a joint press release, both leaders have pledged to institute pre-clearance procedures for cargo in hopes of streamlining cross-border trade and improving customs security.  NAFTA enforcement reforms may also include "co-locating" border security field offices in the same facilities, as well as procedures for entry-exit information sharing between land and air ports of entry along the Canada-U.S. border.  All of these measures are aimed at creating a "21st-century border" which modernizes border security without hindering international trade.
