President Trump signed an Executive Order aimed at restoring the global competitiveness of American seafood. A timely release for Good Friday, second highest day for fish consumption in the United States. The order directs the Department of Commerce to investigate within 30 days burdensome regulations on fisheries and to the fishing industry with input from other federal agencies and the fishing industry. The Secretary within 180 days must submit a report identifying actions to promote sustainable fisheries, reduce trade barriers, and support U.S. seafood producers through streamlined regulations and expanded market access.
The USTR is directed to commence section 301 investigation into the seafood industry to assess seafood competitiveness issues and jointly develop a comprehensive seafood trade strategy.
In conjunction with the fisheries investigation, Trump repealed fishing restrictions for the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM). This action now allows the Secretary of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council to offer commercial fishing licenses for U.S. vessels to fish Wake, Baker, Howland, and Jarvis Islands; Johnston and Palmyra Atolls; and Kingman Reef.
