On June 18, 2025 the United States Senate confirmed a new Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”). The new Commissioner is named Rodney Scott and he began his career as a Border Patrol agent trainee. A Customs press release indicates that he is the first person to rise from agent trainee to Commissioner of Customs.

Commissioner Scott described his intent to lead CBP with “integrity and a clear mission to defend our sovereignty, enforce the law, and put America first.” In light of the Commissioner’s career with the Border Patrol and focus on border enforcement, the trade community likely will need to work hard to advance trade-related issues with CBP in the coming years.
