It is being widely reported that the additional tariffs on vehicles imported from Canada and Mexico have been suspended for one month by the United States. These 25% tariffs just took effect at 12:01 a.m. EST on March 4, 2025. The temporary suspension reportedly applies to finished vehicles coming in through United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“USMCA”).

Announced by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during the White House daily press briefing, the apparent suspension comes after the Trump administration met with leaders of Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors. While there does not appear to be written details available at the moment, the announcement implied that the tariff suspension was for finished vehicles that qualify for preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico were initially delayed one month in February, before being implemented March 4th. This continues to be an evolving situation and there have been public discussions about other possible suspensions as well.
