Trump Announces New 25% Tariff on All Medium and Heavy-Duty Trucks

Oct. 7, 2025
By: Ashley J. Bodden

On October 6, 2025, President Trump announced via Truth Social that all medium and heavy-duty trucks imported into the United States will face a 25 percent tariff rate beginning November 1, 2025. This decision is part of a series of tariffs aimed at protecting U.S. manufacturers from “unfair outside competition.”

While a post on social media is not legally binding (Trump had previously announced these duties for October 1 implementation), it seems clear that these duties are a priority of the administration and are coming.

While Mexico is one of the largest exporters of medium and heavy duty trucks, with the United States as its main destination, medium and heavy duty trucks move tariff free under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement if the regional value content for heavy duty trucks is 70 percent. However, it is unclear how the new Section 232 tariffs will impact USMCA qualifying trucks. Potential impacts include reduced demand from U.S. customers due to higher prices and adjustments in production potentially affecting jobs and supply chains.

We will continue to update on how this new tariff will impact importers and automobile manufacturers. If you have any questions regarding the application of tariffs to imports do not hesitate to contact any attorney at Barnes, Richardson & Colburn, LLP.
