After meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland, President Trump announced that a trade agreement framework with the European Union had been agree upon. While there is no official communication or material setting forth any details of the deal, President Trump did assert a few tidbits.
Based on President Trump’s assertions, the tentative deal includes a 15% baseline tariff for EU origin imports into the U.S. The EU will increase its investment in the United States by $600 billion and commit to buying $750 billion worth of US energy products. Furthermore, the agreement will decrease tariffs on a variety of items, including aircraft and plane parts, semiconductors, generic drugs and some chemicals and agricultural products. Pharmaceuticals, steel, and aluminum appear to be excluded from the 15% tariff.
Leaders within the 27 member EU have reported mixed feelings toward the deal. Some say the deal is too unbalanced and needs more work, while others are relieved to have avoided the threated 50% tariffs on EU goods.
The agreement framework is the basis of the final U.S. and EU trade agreement. We expect to see some changes once the trade agreement is drafted.
