CBP/Census Revise Split Shipment Requirements

August 13, 2013

The U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently revised their split shipment requirements after receiving feedback from the trade community that called the regulations an “undue burden” on trade.  Under the final rule published in March, the agencies required all entries filed under the same Electronic Export Information (EEI) to leave the port within 24 hours.  Now, when a divided shipment is booked under the same EEI, the updated rules call for the carrier to file the cargo manifest, indicating the different parts of the shipment are leaving the same port via the same carrier.  More information from CBP can be found here, and a letter from the agencies can be found here.
