New Chair and Four New Members Selected for House Ways & Means Committee

November 25, 2014

Paul Ryan has been selected as the next chair for the House Ways & Means Committee for the 114th Congress.  Representative Ryan has served in Congress since 1999.  His primary goals as chair are “to fix the tax code, hold the IRS accountable, strengthen Medicare and Social Security, repair the safety net, promote job-creating trade agreements, and determine how best to repeal and replace Obamacare with patient-centered solutions.”

Additionally, Republicans Kisti Noem, Jason Smith, George Holding, and Patrick Meehan will be the next members of the House Ways & Means Committee once new members of Congress begin their terms after the New Year.  Noem and Meehan were first elected to Congress in 2011 and are both advocates of free trade.  They voted for trade agreements with Korea, Panama, and Columbia.  Meehan also supported the 2012 reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank, while Noem was against it.  Smith and Holding are both freshmen members of Congress and have not had the same opportunities to vote on free trade issues.  Ryan and Meehan have stated that one of their main priorities on the committee will be tax code reform.
