Following suit from today’s earlier report announcing the 25% tariff exemption for Mexican imports into the U.S. that qualify for preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“USMCA”), Canadian USMCA-qualifying goods are now also reported to be exempt.
Exemption for Canadian USMCA imports is also reported to last until April 2nd, when then tariffs may be hiked on certain products as the administrations plans to set reciprocal trade treatment across specific commodities. More detail will be reported once available.
25% tariffs on all Mexican goods, 10% tariffs on Canadian energy and 25% tariffs on other Canadian imports initially went into effect March 4, 2025 at 12:01 a.m. EST.
This continues to be an evolving situation and there have been public discussions about other possible suspensions as well. Should you have any questions regarding tariffs or any other trade-related question, please contact any attorney at Barnes Richardson and Colburn.
