Tariff Exemptions on Mexican USMCA Imports Reported

Mar. 6, 2025
By: Chaney A. Finn

Tariff exemptions are reportedly being granted for Mexican goods imported into the U.S. that qualify for preferential treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“USMCA”). The exemption allegedly applies through April 2nd.

This exemption comes shortly after 25% tariffs were implemented on goods imported from Canada and Mexico effective 12:01 a.m. EST on March 4, 2025. Tariffs on USMCA-qualifying autos imported from Canada and Mexico were announced yesterday to be suspended for one month. This latest announcement appears to expand that exemption to most Mexican goods that meet USMCA requirements. Specific details at this point are unclear.

This tariff suspension comes after talks between President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. It is suspected that this exemption may expand to include Canadian goods that meet USMCA qualifications as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been in talks with the Trump administration. We will provide updates should that be the case.

This continues to be an evolving situation and there have been public discussions about other possible suspensions as well. Should you have any questions regarding tariffs or any other trade-related question, please contact any attorney at Barnes Richardson and Colburn.
