President Trump stated during a Cabinet meeting that 50% duties would be announced by the Commerce Department later on July 8 with respect to copper and copper derivatives. At the time of publication no announcement had been made, although Commerce Secretary Lutnick had confirmed the finding by the agency.

The Trump administration’s Section 232 investigations into various sectors are about to boil over (see our articles on the investigations here, here, and here) as he also hinted that investigations against pharmaceuticals and semiconductors are nearing completion. At least with respect to pharmaceuticals Trump mentioned a potential tariff rate of 200%, although there has been no official announcement by Commerce. Secretary confirmed his expectation that the pharmaceutical and semiconductor investigations would be completed by the end of July 2025.
Importers should thoroughly review their supply chains, as copper is used in multiple industries and at various stages of production. Specifically, copper is a material used in auto parts (as a primary mineral for EV batteries), hardware, cookware, household goods, construction, and tooling. Pricing on these products is also likely to increase as the tariffs are implemented and derivatives are identified. President Trump had previously made exceptions for Section 232 products, such as auto parts, for certain trading partners, including the UK, Canada, and Mexico. It is not yet clear if this will continue for copper.
